Vintage photo booth vs 360, mirror and open-air booths

which suits your event?

Search "photo booth hire Sydney" and you'll get four very different things back: spinning 360 platforms, touchscreen mirrors, open-air setups with a backdrop, and vintage step-in booths with a curtain. They all take photos. They don't all do the same job.

We hire vintage photo booths, so we're not neutral. But the wrong booth makes for a flat event, and that's bad for everyone. Here's an honest look at all four and the events each one suits.

The four booth types at a glance

360 photo booths

Guests stand on a platform while a camera on an arm circles them, recording a slow-motion clip. It's built for video and social feeds.

Where it shines: product launches and parties where the goal is short-form video, and crowds who like to perform.

Where it falls short: there's usually no physical print, so nothing goes home in a pocket. It needs a big footprint with clearance around the arm, and only a few people fit per spin. Some guests find it a lot to step up in front of everyone.

Mirror photo booths

A full-length mirror with a camera behind it. The screen animates, guests tap to start, and it prints a photo.

Where it shines: formal events, galas and spaces where a sleek, modern piece fits the styling.

Where it falls short: it's screen-led, so it can feel like any other device in the room. Guests are on show, which keeps photos polite.

Open-air photo booths

A camera, a light and a backdrop, with no walls. The most common booth at Sydney events.

Where it shines: big groups, casual parties and tight budgets. Ten people can pile into one photo.

Where it falls short: it's everywhere, so it rarely feels like a highlight. The backdrop does most of the visual work, and without good styling it can look like a school photo day.

Vintage step-in photo booths

An enclosed, curtained booth that prints a classic photo strip. The format people know from train stations and arcades, and the one some search for as an "old school photo booth".

Where it shines: the curtain changes how people act. Behind it, guests drop the pose and get weird, close and funny, and they walk out holding a strip they'll keep. The booth itself is a styled object that works as a centrepiece, and it can be wrapped in a brand's own design.

Where it falls short: it's built for small groups. If you need 15 people in one photo, an open-air booth does that better.
